The Avengers - 147 mins - PG
Marvel Studios delivers the ultimate comic-book film, which ties together such characters as Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) for a big-screen franchise team-up like no other. Show runner Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly) adapted and helmed the script by Zak Penn, which focuses on a superhero lineup put together by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) to combat a hostile force out to destroy the world. Scarlett Johansson once again dons the Black Widow costume, with Jeremy Renner stepping into the role of ace archer Hawkeye. Tom Hiddleston also returns as Thor's ever-deceptive brother, Loki. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, Rovi
Dark Shadows - 113 mins - 14A
Entombed for 200 years after betraying vengeful witch Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green), 18th century vampire Barnabas Collins (Johnny Depp) returns to Collinwood Manor in 1972, only to find his estate in ruins and his family plagued by macabre secrets in Tim Burton's
reboot of the popular supernatural soap opera. It was the year 1752
when Barnabas Collins' parents attempted to elude a family curse by
fleeing from England to America. Twenty years later, wealthy Barnabas
was the master of Collinwood Manor, and one of the most powerful figures
in Collinsport, ME. But Barnabas' playboy lifestyle would soon catch up
with him when he casts aside a beautiful yet vengeful witch named
Angelique, who subsequently transformed him into a vampire, and then
cruelly sealed him in a lonely tomb. Flash forward to the year 1972,
when Barnabas is released from his burial chamber. Returning home to
Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is horrified to find his ancestral home in a
wretched state of decay, and his descendants plagued by macabre secrets.
Distressed by the tragedy that has befallen her family, determined
matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer) employs live-in psychiatrist Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter)
to try and solve their many problems. But the more time Dr. Hoffman
spends with the Collins' -- including Elizabeth's black-sheep brother
Roger (Jonny Lee Miller) and headstrong teenage daughter Carolyn Stoddard (Chloe Moretz) -- the more apparent it becomes that their problems run far deeper than simple dysfunction. Jackie Earle Haley, Bella Heathcote, and Gulliver McGrath co-star. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
21 Jump Street - 111 mins - 14A
The television series that shot Johnny Depp to stardom makes the leap to the big screen in this reboot starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum. Schmidt (Hill) and Jenko (Tatum)
have the kind of faces that could let them pass for teenagers. Eager to
prove themselves as effective policemen, the pair join the Jump Street
program and go undercover to investigate a high-school drug ring. Now,
the only thing more daunting than the prospect of taking on violent
adolescent dope slingers is the possibility of experiencing the torture
of their teenage years all over again. Ice Cube, Brie Larson, and Rob Riggle co-star. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
Cabin in the Woods - 98 mins - 18A
Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard team up for this bloody horror satire that
offers an inventive twist on the familiar stranded-in-the-woods
sub-genre. As five friends pile into an RV bound for a secluded cabin
far from civilization, the operators of a mysterious, high-tech control
room monitor their every move while preparing an arcane ritual that
dates back to the beginning of time. Shortly after arriving at the
rickety cottage, Dana (Kristen Connolly) and her friends Curt (Chris
Hemsworth), Jules (Anna Hutchison), Marty (Fran Kranz), and Holden
(Jesse Willaims) venture into the basement and discover a little girl's
diary from the early 1900s -- which recounts a series of horrifying
events that unfolded precisely where the vacationing teens how stand.
Before long, the nightmare comes knocking at the door -- murder gleaming
from its putrid eyes and a rusty saw clenched in rotting hands. In the
control room, everything is going exactly according to plan; Sitterson
(Richard Jenkins) and Hadley (Bradley Whitford) are taking bets, and
their supervisor Lin (Amy Acker) is monitoring every detail. But just
when it looks like the show is over, an unexpected glitch threatens to
topple the entire system. ~ Rovi
The Lucky One - 105 mins - PG
An Iraq War veteran searches for the woman from a mysterious photo that
he credits with saving his life during three tours of duty in this
romantic drama adapted from the book by Nicholas Sparks. U.S. Marine sergeant Logan Thibault (Zac Efron)
was serving his country overseas when he happened across a discarded
photo of a beautiful woman. An inscription on the back read "Keep Safe,"
yet the photo revealed no clues about either the subject or her
whereabouts. Upon returning home to civilian life, Logan conducts his
own research and discovers that the woman's name is Beth (Taylor Schilling)
and that she cares for dogs at a small-town kennel. Before long, Logan
manages to get a job at the kennel, and sets his sights on winning
Beth's heart. But it won't be easy because Beth's past experiences have
made her wary of relationships. Meanwhile, as Logan works to earn Beth's
trust, a dark secret from her past threatens to derail his hope for a
happy future together. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen - PG 117 mins
A handful of curious Brits become fish out of water when they get mixed
up in the dream project of an eccentric sheikh in this satirical comedy.
Emily Blunt
is Harriet Chetwode-Talbot, a British businesswoman who manages the
financial affairs of a wealthy but eccentric Arab named Sheikh Muhammed
(Amr Waked).
Muhammed's latest proposition involves paying fifty million pounds to
fully stock a Yemeni river with salmon, and thus engender sport fishing
in the desert region. To better gauge the feasibility of this wild plan,
Harriet contacts
Dr. Alfred "Fred" Jones (Ewan McGregor),
a Scottish scientist who specializes in establishing fisheries. Jones
shoots the plan down instantly, but soon Patricia Maxwell (Kristin Scott Thomas),
the press secretary to the British prime minister, catches wind of it
and sees it as the ideal way to promote better international relations
between England and the Middle East, especially in light of the torrent
of bad news concerning terrorism and general unrest in the Arabic
countries. She does everything she can to turn Jones around. Though the
scientist will have no part of it at first, he's threatened with job
termination if he refuses, and then sets out to create a fully stocked
lake in the middle of the desert. As Jones takes on a project that ranks
somewhere between ridiculous and impossible, he also finds he's falling
in love with Chetwode-Talbot, though the fact that he's married and she
has a boyfriend (Tom Mison) fighting in the Middle East makes things sticky. Based on the best-selling novel by Paul Torday, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen received its world premiere at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
Monsieur Lazhar - 98 mins - PG
A teacher and his students learn from one another in the wake of a tragedy in this drama from director Philippe Falardeau. Simon (Emilien Neron) and Alice (Sophie Nelisse)
are a pair of grade-school students who make a shocking discovery one
day when they witness their teacher taking her own life in their
classroom. The school's principal (Danielle Proulx) wants things back to normal as soon as possible, and when substitute teacher Bachir Lazhar (Mohamed Fellag)
drops off his resume after learning of the tragedy, he's hired almost
on the spot. The children don't immediately take to Lazhar, since most
of them have never had a male teacher before, and Lazhar has his own
adjustments to deal with -- he's an Algerian immigrant new to Montreal,
he's still learning the finer points of Quebecois French, and his
teaching style differs from that of his new colleagues. But as Lazhar
tries to guide Simon, Alice, and their classmates through the shock of
what has happened, he also finds the experience helps him heal after
struggling with a loss of his own. Monsieur Lazhar (aka Bachir Lazhar)
won the Audience Award at the 2011 Locarno Film Festival and was
nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2012 Academy Awards. ~
